Misconceptions of Bookkeepers and Accountants

Do you know someone who is a bookkeeper or accountant? If so, you've probably noticed that they are often the target of geeky jokes and comments. But why is this?

What is it about being a bookkeeper or accountant that makes people think they are geeky?

In this blog post, we will explore the truth behind the stereotype of bookkeepers and accountants. We will discuss why people tend to think of them as nerdy, and we will also talk about the importance of their profession.

As a bookkeeper I am in a Facebook Community of thousands of bookkeepers and I am yet to meet one who is the so called typical stereotype. Yet, when I tell someone what I do when I first meet them, they automatically assume I am boring or nerdy! So let's get these misconceptions cleared up once and for all!

“People who work in Finance are boring”

FALSE. I have worked with some of the most interesting, hilarious and intelligent people in my field. We are often stereotyped as being boring because we like details and numbers. But the truth is, bookkeepers and accountants are often very passionate about their work. They take pride in accuracy and precision, and they strive to provide clients with the best possible service. We still let our hair down in our free time!

“People who work in Finance are geeky”

Far from it! Creating a successful business doesn't make anyone geeky, it just means we are experts in our field we can give guidance to our clients so that they can build successful businesses too!

"Bookkeepers are unsociable"

Now this comment is the funniest of them all! You only have to join the Facebook community I am in to see that we are far from unsociable. I've met many bookkeeping friends on Facebook and we have met in person and had such a good time together. I can't think of any other profession who would be so supportive of one another and think about collaboration over competition the way we do.

"Bookkeepers are old fashioned"

Now this is one thing that's impossible to be if you want to be a successful bookkeeper. Bookkeeping has changed drastically over the years thanks to the changing technology and developing software. We have to be 'in the know' when it comes to the latest software available to us and how we can use it to our advantage in order to help our clients. We put automations and processes in place to give consistency and streamline our clients bookkeeping. So we are far from old fashioned.

"Bookkeepers are only needed for larger businesses"

Every business needs a bookkeeper, small or large, Sole Trader or Limited Company. It's a legal requirement to keep records of your finances in order to report to HMRC. So even if you are a one-man-band, you will still need to engage the services of a bookkeeper, especially when your business gets busy. You will soon lose control of your finances and you will be on a slippery slope.

Not only do we help you to keep a record of your finances we help you to budget and forecast your cashflow. This means you save time, money and can plan ahead for the future of your business.

"Bookkeepers are expensive"

Most bookkeepers offer packages to suit your requirement on an individual basis. This means you only pay for the services you need. Not only can you claim your bookkeeping fee as a tax deductible expense, the return on investment will be well worth it.

A bookkeeper can help your business to thrive, get in touch today to see how we can help you!
