How to stay motivated whilst working from home

Back in March 2020 everyone who was able to, was encouraged to work from home. This seemed very surreal for most, as it was never an option for them before. No one knew what to expect or how they would cope with it. Fast forward 2 years and many people found that working from home actually worked really well for them and so decided to make it more permanent. Although working from home has its advantages it can be difficult to stay motivated, so here are some top tips.

Routine

It's vital to keep a routine despite being in your home environment. It can be very tempting if you have no meetings booked to stay in your PJ's at your desk but being too relaxed will make you lethargic and you won't be in the right frame of mind to tackle the day ahead.

Get showered and dress as you would if you were attending the office, you'll be surprised at how different you will feel.

Take breaks

When you're stuck in the flow of work it can be difficult to drag yourself away from your desk. You may think taking a break will interrupt your workflow, but in actual fact taking a break and getting some fresh air will clear your mind and improve your concentration.

Time Management

Plan out your day and ensure you allocate time for certain tasks. Have a to do list or use task management software to hold yourself accountable. Don't be too ambitious and set yourself too much work to do which isn't realistic as this will just deflate and disappoint you. You'll feel much better when you start ticking off those tasks.

If you have chunky tasks to complete, break them down into smaller steps so it doesn't feel too challenging to complete.

Avoid distractions

Working from home has so many great advantages, you can stick your washing in, prep food for the evening meal, do household chores, but don't let these jobs distract you from your work. Use your time management to decide when to squeeze in these tasks.

Your phone can be a huge distraction, so only pick it up when you need to. Set yourself time to check emails and messages in between your tasks and concentrate on the job in hand, no scrolling through Facebook! (unless that's an essential part of your job of course!)

Overall working from home is perfect for a lot of people especially when you're gaining more time from no longer having the commute to work. You just need to find a routine that works for you and stick to it. Utilise your time wisely, take breaks when you need to and most importantly avoid distractions. Then you'll be a motivated machine!
