What do I need to include on an invoice?
If you’re just starting out in business you will have lots of questions you need answered and one of them will be, “what do I include on my invoices?” As I often get asked this question I thought I’d write this blog to clarify.
- A unique reference number also known as an invoice number - this can include letters and numbers but you must keep it consistent. For example your first invoice could be INV001 or 00001.
- Your company name
- Your address
- Contact information
- The address of the business/individual you are invoicing
- A description of what you are charging for
- The date the goods/services were supplied
- The invoice date
- The total amount being charged
- VAT if applicable
- The amount outstanding
All of the above are legal requirements that you must display on your invoices. We recommend including information such as the due date and your payment method, for example your bank details or link to Stripe/GoCardless or Paypal for instance.
If you're a
Sole Trader you must include your name T/A your business name along with your address.
If you are a
Limited Company
you must include your full incorporated name. You don’t need to list names of directors but if you choose to you must list them all.
If you charge
VAT
remember you must be registered to do so. On your invoices you will need to include the amount of VAT you are charging, whether that be standard rate or other and this must be listed as a separate amount clearly showing that it is VAT that you are charging. You must include your VAT number on all invoices. For further information visit the
government website.
